5 sectors are rotating · 6 stable
Five of eleven S&P 500 sectors flipped relative leadership versus the same calendar window one year ago. Technology swung from the market's clearest leader (RS +4.2pp over SPY in Oct '25) to a decided laggard (RS −2.8pp), driven by a late-window semi-cap breakdown that pulled SMH and SOXX down 4-5% in the final sessions. Mirror-image strength appeared in Energy (+5.5pp vs −5.2pp a year ago), Consumer Staples (+4.6pp vs −1.4pp), Consumer Discretionary (narrowly flipping from −3.8pp to +0.6pp), and Materials (barely crossing into positive RS from −4.1pp a year ago).\n\nThe single most surprising non-rotation: Utilities went from +7.7pp lead a year ago to just +0.9pp today — technically "stable_positive" but a massive deceleration that doesn't quite trigger our sign-flip criterion. Combined with the Tech breakdown, the overall picture is a classic defensive-and-energy pincer taking share from Big Tech leadership — the shape of a late-cycle leadership transition rather than a pure risk-off.
Energy
XLEEnergy flipped from last year's clear laggard (−5.3pp vs SPY) to this window's standout leader (+5.5pp). The driver is firming crude on supply tightness combined with a weaker dollar lifting the complex. Flows corroborate the price action: $8.8B net inflow into XLE over 10 days, with XOP and VDE each printing meaningful positive flow despite choppy day-to-day price action. OIH held up on price but printed smaller net flows as the services sub-sector lagged pure E&P. The move has late-cycle character — energy outperforms when global growth expectations firm up and the broader tape rotates away from mega-cap growth.
