Sector Rotation Detector · Weekly Scan · Public preview

3 sectors are rotating · 8 stable

Scan day · Saturday, August 29, 2026

Three of eleven S&P 500 sectors flipped their sign versus SPY across the last-30-day window compared with the same calendar window one year ago. Technology (XLK) is the standout turning-positive rotation (+1.94 RS vs -2.51 a year ago, magnitude 4.45pp), while Financials (XLF, -2.58pp) and Materials (XLB, -2.94pp) are the two clean turning-negative flips versus their 2025 leadership. The remaining eight sectors are stable-directional: Energy, Health Care, Discretionary and Communication Services still lead SPY; Industrials, Staples, Utilities and Real Estate still trail.\n\nThe most surprising item is not the tech rotation itself but the money-flow inside it. XLK price is up +5.67% on the month, yet the 10-day flow proxy on every semi vehicle is deeply negative (SMH -$11.5B, SOXX -$4.4B, XLK -$589M). Only VGT (+$451M) shows net inflow. Price is running ahead of volume-weighted participation — a short-cover / narrow-leadership pattern rather than broad institutional accumulation. In Materials, the "sector lagging" headline hides GDX (+$11.0B of net flow, +29.8% 30-day) doing all the heavy lifting while broad materials names bleed. Rotation is happening beneath the sector-level tape, not on top of it.

Thesis

Tech was a slight laggard versus SPY a year ago (-0.84% vs +1.67%) and is now clearly leading (+5.67% vs +3.73%). The move fits the second-half AI-capex reacceleration narrative — hyperscaler guides in late-July earnings extended 2027 GPU commitments, dragging platform stocks higher. But the money-flow reading is the story: SMH shows −$11.5B of net 10-day flow while its price is up, SOXX −$4.4B, XLK −$589M. Only VGT (+$451M) shows net accumulation. Price leadership is running ahead of volume-weighted participation — consistent with short covering and narrow mega-cap concentration, not broad institutional rotation. Treat XLK's turning-positive as tentative until flow confirms.
