Smart money is quietly loading 5 stocks

Scan day · Saturday, October 17, 2026

The scan compared 13F-HR filings for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (filed August 13-14) against the March 31, 2026 window across the five configured funds — Berkshire Hathaway, Bridgewater Associates, Renaissance Technologies, Citadel Advisors, and Two Sigma. All five returned holdings. Roughly 787 CUSIPs passed the base acceleration filter (net buyers > net sellers plus ≥25% aggregate QoQ share growth or ≥2 new positions); 145 of those had Berkshire or Bridgewater as a supporting buyer. After layering market-cap, liquidity, earnings-window (seven-trading-day exclusion), and retail-attention screens, five names survived.

The single most surprising finding is NiSource. Bridgewater built a 1.4-million-share NiSource position from essentially zero (24,531 → 1,410,001 shares) while Renaissance initiated the second-largest add, taking aggregate holdings up 555% QoQ. NiSource is the kind of regulated Midwest utility that rarely draws fast money. The co-occurrence of a slow macro-driven initiation (Bridgewater) and a quant initiation (Renaissance) on the same name suggests both camps found independent evidence of a near-term thesis — most plausibly AI data-center load growth in Indiana and Ohio. Two of the five names (Core & Main and NiSource) are currently trading below the funds' estimated quarter-end entry, meaning retail still has the chance to buy at or below where the four-fund syndicate was buying.

Thesis

The strongest signal in this scan. Bridgewater's 1.4M-share NiSource initiation from essentially zero is highly uncharacteristic for a macro fund — it typically holds utilities only as yield proxies at the index weight, not as discretionary builds. Pair that with Renaissance going from 9,000 to 747,300 shares, and you have independent fundamental and quant conviction converging on the same regulated Midwest utility (NIPSCO electric, Columbia Gas across IN/OH/PA/VA/KY). The under-recognized catalyst is AI data-center load growth in Indiana (Microsoft, Google, Meta have all announced sites in NiSource's service territory) and the regulatory window to monetize that capex at the 2027 rate case. The stock trades at ~16x forward EPS, roughly a one-point discount to pure-regulated utility comps despite a visibly accelerating demand curve.
